AirPlay: QuickTime + AppleTV = Mac/iOS Streaming to another Mac

Have an AppleTV (4th generation only)?
If so, you can use it to connect your iOS device (iPad, iPhone, iPod Touch) to your Mac computer. You can also watch anything broadcasting on your AppleTV on your Mac’s screen.
Why?
This feature is a great tool for distance learning when you have to share your computer screen over a video conference service such as Google Meet and Zoom and might want to display your iPad, iPhone, iPod Touch, or another Mac during the online meeting. This allows you to switch between devices using AirPlay as you would in the classroom.
How?
You can do this with a built in app on your Mac computer called “QuickTime Player”. To get started, you will need to turn on your TV or projector to see the AppleTV screen. Then on your Mac computer, do the following:

1. Be sure your Mac computer and AppleTV are on the same network.
2. Open QuickTime Player (located in the Applications folder)
3. In QuickTime Player, click on the File menu (See image A below)
4. Select “New Movie Recording”. A window will open. By default, your webcam might turn on. Don't worry, this will be addressed in the next step.
5. In the open window, click the recording menu (located next to the red record button. See image B & C below)
6. Select AppleTV (by default the FaceTIme HD camera is selected)
7. You will be prompted to enter an access code. The code will be displayed on the TV or projector. (See image D below)
8. Your AppleTV should now be displayed on your Mac computer within QuickTime Player. On the TV or projector, you will see a red frame around your AppleTV screen which means QuickTime is communicating with your AppleTV. Anything the AppleTV is showing will display on the QuickTime window. (See image E below)
9. You can click on the red record button to record your AirPlay session. However, the audio will be whatever was selected in the record menu such as a microphone.

Want to AirPlay directly to QuickTime?

Just like using AirPlay to mirror your Mac or iOS device (iPad, iPhone, iPod Touch) to your TV or projector through the AppleTV, you can AirPlay within QuickTime Player. This is also handy if you have items on a second computer that you would like to display but not copy over to the computer you’re AirPlaying to.

1. Follow the steps above to connect QuickTime Player to your AppleTV.
2. From the Mac computer or iOS device turn on Screen Mirroring to AirPlay on the AppleTV.
3. You should now see your iOS device on your Mac with QuickTIme Player.
4. You can click on the red record button to record your AirPlay session. However, the audio will be whatever was selected in the record menu such as a microphone.

NOTE: A word of caution… EVERYTHING being displayed on your AppleTV will be displayed on QuickTime Player before and after connecting a Mac or iOS device via AirPlay.
